According to the central bank governor, John Mangudya, the gold coins \u201chave proved to be an effective open market instrument for mopping up excess liquidity in the economy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Gold Coins as Alternative Value Preservation Tool<\/h2>\n<p>According to the Zimbabwean central bank, about 25,188 \u201cMosi-oa-Tunya\u201d gold coins valued at over $28 million (ZWD$20 billion) were sold between July 2022 \u2014 when the coins were initially introduced \u2014 and Jan. 13. From this total, acquisitions by the so-called corporates accounted for 84% \u201cwhile purchases by individuals accounted for 16%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Initially launched to act as \u201can alternative retail investment product for value preservation,\u201d for the wealthy, the bank said lower denomination gold coins introduced in Nov. 2022 \u201caccounted for 38% of all sales.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the gold coins\u2019 impact since their introduction, Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) governor John Mangudya <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbz.co.zw\/documents\/press\/2023\/February\/MPS_February_2023.pdf\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The coins have proved to be an effective open market instrument for mopping up excess liquidity in the economy and a retail investment product for preserving value for investable funds.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The RBZ governor added that the coins, which have a 180-day vesting period, along with the bank\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/zimbabwe-to-hike-benchmark-rate-to-200-central-bank-minted-gold-coins-to-act-as-store-of-value\/\">high-interest rate policy<\/a>, played a part in stabilizing inflation and the local currency\u2019s exchange rate versus the greenback.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2>Zimbabwe\u2019s Receding Inflation<\/h2>\n<p>According to the local statistical office, Zimstats, the southern African country\u2019s month-on-month inflation fell from a high of 30.74% in June 2022 to 1.1% in Jan. 2023. Despite this slowdown, Zimbabwe\u2019s latest annual inflation rate of 230% remains one of the highest globally.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-573056 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cryptocabaret.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/photo_2023-02-09-15-18-38.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/photo_2023-02-09-15-18-38-300x168.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/static.news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/photo_2023-02-09-15-18-38-190x107.jpeg 190w, https:\/\/www.cryptocabaret.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/photo_2023-02-09-15-18-38.jpeg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\"><\/p>\n<p>Concerning the Zimbabwean dollar\u2019s exchange rate versus the U.S. dollar, the latest RBZ data suggests that the parallel market premium dropped from a high of nearly 100% on July 1, 2022, to well under 50% by Dec. 19, 2022. As shown by the data, the local currency\u2019s auction market exchange rate, which stood at just over ZWL100:USD1 on Jan. 11, 2022, closed the year at approximately ZWL700:USD1. According to the RBZ data, the local currency\u2019s parallel market exchange rate on Dec. 19 stood at approximately 900:1.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in his 2023 monetary policy statement, RBZ governor Mangudya said the bank \u201cwill continue to avail gold coins on a demand-driven basis as it seeks to promote a savings culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What are your thoughts on this story?
