According to a Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec newsroom report, the company has asked the electricity transmission and distribution regulator, R\u00e9gie de l\u2019\u00e9nergie, to cease offering services to crypto miners. The Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec report stresses that \u201cgrowth in electricity demand is expected to continue in Qu\u00e9bec.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec Targets Blockchain Industry in Order to Stave off Electricity Demand<\/h2>\n

Cryptocurrency miners in Qu\u00e9bec may need to find new sources of energy if Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s request<\/a> to the lead distribution regulator R\u00e9gie de l\u2019\u00e9nergie is approved. The request mentioned at the end of the electricity demand study is a \u201crequest to suspend the allocation of electricity to the blockchain industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a number of digital currency mining operations in Qu\u00e9bec and in mid-September, reports had shown that Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s Mohawk Council of Kahnawake planned to petition<\/a> Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec for electricity dedicated to bitcoin mining. Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s newsroom report says that while it has taken steps to increase capacity, there\u2019s been a \u201csignificant increase\u201d in demand from blockchain miners.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn light of the significant increase in the anticipated demand for electricity and the tightening energy and capacity balances, Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec filed a request with the R\u00e9gie de l\u2019\u00e9nergie regarding suspension of the allocation process to the blockchain industry,\u201d the report discloses.<\/p>\n

The Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec report adds:<\/p>\n

Under this process, approximately 270 MW were slated to be dedicated to cryptographic use over the short term, but the allocation of that amount of capacity to this use would increase pressure on current balances.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

It\u2019s unclear how the request will affect miners operating in Quebec and it\u2019s also unknown exactly how many facilities are leveraging Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s resources. Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec says it also increased capacity by adding a \u201c3,000-MW portfolio of wind power projects.\u201d<\/p>\n
