Most of my articles begin in a note-taking application and that\u2019s usually <a href=\"https:\/\/opensource.com\/article\/21\/1\/notes-joplin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joplin<\/a> for me. There are a large number of note-taking apps for Linux and you may use something other than my favorite. A recent blog article reminded me of a half dozen of them, so I assembled a list of my favorites.<\/p>\n<h2>Joplin<\/h2>\n<article class=\"align-center media media--type-image media--view-mode-default\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item\">  <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cryptocabaret.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/joplin.png\" width=\"1024\" height=\"735\" alt=\"Joplin\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-caption field--type-text-long field--label-hidden caption field__item\"><span class=\"caption__byline\">Image by: <\/span><\/p>\n<p>(Opensource.com, CC BY-SA 4.0)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/joplinapp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joplin<\/a> is available on Linux, Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. I like Joplin because it automatically saves whatever you add to it. Notes can be uploaded to NextCloud, OwnCloud, Joplin Cloud, and even closed source services like OneDrive, Dropbox, or any WebDav applications. Joplin supports encryption.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to export notes in a variety of formats, too. It comes with eight different themes that allow you to tailor its look.<\/p>\n<p>Joplin has an MIT license. Its aim is to let you create notes containing nearly any media type you can imagine. It supports pressure-sensitive stylus and drawing tablets so you create <a href=\"https:\/\/opensource.com\/article\/22\/6\/open-source-sketchnotes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sketchnotes<\/a>. You can type into it, draw simple vectors, import graphics, record audio, and more. You can also use Xournal to annotate PDFs, which is how I have used it. It is released with a GPLv2 license, and you can export notes in a variety of formats.<\/p>\n<h2>Trillium<\/h2>\n<article class=\"align-center media media--type-image media--view-mode-default\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item\">  <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cryptocabaret.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/trillium.png\" width=\"1024\" height=\"736\" alt=\"Trillium\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-caption field--type-text-long field--label-hidden caption field__item\"><span class=\"caption__byline\">Image by: <\/span><\/p>\n<p>(Opensource.com, CC BY-SA 4.0)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/zadam\/trilium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trillium<\/a> is a hierarchical note-taking application with a focus on knowledge building bases. It features rich WYSIWYG editing with tables, images, and markdown. It has support for editing notes in source code with syntax highlighting. It&#8217;s released under the Gnu Affero License.<\/p>\n<p>Trilium is available as a desktop application for Linux and Windows, as well as a web application that you can host on your own Linux server.<\/p>\n<h2>Gnote<\/h2>\n<article class=\"align-center media media--type-image media--view-mode-default\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item\">  <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cryptocabaret.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/gnote.png\" width=\"1023\" height=\"736\" alt=\"Gnote\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-caption field--type-text-long field--label-hidden caption field__item\"><span class=\"caption__byline\">Image by: <\/span><\/p>\n<p>(Opensource.com, CC BY-SA 4.0)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.gnome.org\/Apps\/Gnote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gnote<\/a> is an open source note taking application written for Linux. It was cloned by Hubert Figui\u00e8re from a project called <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.gnome.org\/Apps\/Tomboy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tomboy<\/a>. Like Tomboy, Gnote uses a wiki-like linking system to allow you to link notes together.<\/p>\n<p>GNote&#8217;s source code is available on <a href=\"https:\/\/gitlab.gnome.org\/GNOME\/gnote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GitLab<\/a>. The software is licensed with GPLv3.<\/p>\n<h2>CherryTree<\/h2>\n<article class=\"align-center media media--type-image media--view-mode-default\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item\">  <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cryptocabaret.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/cherrytree.png\" width=\"913\" height=\"631\" alt=\"CherryTree\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-caption field--type-text-long field--label-hidden caption field__item\"><span class=\"caption__byline\">Image by: <\/span><\/p>\n<p>(Opensource.com, CC BY-SA 4.0)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p>CherryTree supports hierarchical note-taking. In CherryTree everything is a node. Nodes can be plain text, rich text, syntax highlighting for a variety of programming languages. Each node can have child nodes each with a different format.<\/p>\n<p>CherryTree features rich text and syntax highlighting, and can store data in a single XML or <a href=\"https:\/\/opensource.com\/article\/21\/2\/sqlite3-cheat-sheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SQLite<\/a> file. CherryTree can import from a variety of formats including Markdown, HTML, plain text, Gnote, Tomboy, and others.
