On August 9, a firm that uses landfill methane to fuel bitcoin miners, Vespene Energy, announced the company has raised $4.3 million in a funding round led by Polychain Capital. Vespene aims to use the funds for its pilot in California by using landfill methane to mine bitcoin and \u201cmitigate a major source of greenhouse gas emissions.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Vespene Energy<\/a> announced that the company has raised<\/a> $4.3 million from a financing round led by Polychain Capital. According to the company\u2019s website<\/a>, the startup converts landfill methane into bitcoin value with no grid connections or pipeline buildout. Vespene essentially installs onsite data centers powered by micro-turbines, getting energy from municipal landfills\u2019 methane.<\/p>\n It gives landfill owners the ability to monetize their landfill methane, \u201creducing routine flaring and maintenance costs,\u201d Vespene\u2019s product summary says. Polychain Capital founder and CEO Olaf Carlson-Wee said on Tuesday that he believes the continued adoption of bitcoin will benefit from solutions like Vespene Energy\u2019s product.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are excited to partner with Vespene as they build a creative solution to use mining to eliminate a potent greenhouse gas source, while making its energy mix greener,\u201d the Polychain Capital founder said in a statement. Vespene Energy\u2019s fundraising round comes at a time when there\u2019s been a lot of negative attention<\/a> focused on Bitcoin\u2019s proof-of-work consensus mechanism and the energy the network uses.<\/p>\n While many believe much of the negative attention is misguided<\/a>, a number of companies are helping the environment by powering bitcoin mining facilities with flare gas emissions. In fact, at the end of May, the CEO of Geneious and ESG analyst, Daniel Batten, published a report that shows bitcoin mining could help the environment a great deal. Batten\u2019s study<\/a> further highlights that bitcoin mining is possibly the best way to reduce methane and could eliminate the world\u2019s carbon emissions by 5.32%.<\/p>\n In addition to the flare gas mitigation firm Vespene Energy, there\u2019s also companies like Crusoe Energy, Greenidge Generation, Upstream Data, and EZ Blockchain transforming flare gas emissions into BTC<\/a>. Crusoe secured<\/a> $505 million in capital in April 2022, and gas giants like Exxon Mobil<\/a>, Equinor<\/a>, and Conocophillips are reportedly<\/a> working with gas-to-bitcoin solutions.<\/p>\n Compass Mining also released<\/a> a documentary video<\/a> that\u2019s centered around the subject of bitcoin mining and its relationship with the oil and gas industry in Wyoming. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that America\u2019s landfills account for 15% of methane emissions, but studies<\/a> show the numbers could be much higher. According to the company website, Vespene\u2019s tech curbs methane, VOCs, CO2, and NOX emissions.<\/p>\n \u201cOur goal is to mitigate a major source of greenhouse gas emissions and help fuel the transition to a renewable energy future by using Bitcoin mining to turn landfill methane streams into revenue streams for our customers,\u201d Adam Wright, Vespene\u2019s co-founder and CEO, said.
