The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested two men who participated \u201cin a violent plan to break into a family\u2019s home in the middle of the night\u201d to steal bitcoin worth tens of millions of dollars,\u201d according to the U.S. Department of Justice. They could go to prison for 20 years.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n \n The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested the two on Thursday in Virginia.<\/p>\n U.S. Attorney Damian Williams detailed:\n<\/p>\n The defendants participated in a violent plan to break into a family\u2019s home in the middle of the night and force its residents to provide the code to what the defendants believed was tens of millions of dollars in bitcoin currency.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n \n Around the time of the planned home invasion, bitcoin was trading at about $10,000 per coin. BTC<\/a> peaked at an all-time high price of $68,892 in November 2021. It has since dropped in value and is currently trading at $20,892.<\/p>\n The Justice Department described:\n<\/p>\n Pineda, 21, of Manassas, Virginia, and Morgan, 21, of Centreville, Virginia, are each charged with conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery, in violation of 18 U.S.C. \u00a7 1951, which carries a maximum term of 20 years in prison.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n \n2 Men Charged for Planning to Steal Bitcoin<\/h2>\n
\nThe U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Friday the unsealing of an indictment charging Dominic Pineda and Shon Morgan with a \u201cplan to commit home invasion robbery for tens of millions of dollars in bitcoin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
\nAccording to the court document, the defendants participated in the plan from May 18 to May 24, 2020, \u201cto break into a home in Irvington, New York and rob its residents of cash and cryptocurrency.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
\nThe Hobbs Act defines robbery as unlawfully taking another person\u2019s property \u201cby means of actual or threatened force.\u201d<\/p>\n
