The announcement, posted via Honduras\u2019 central bank official Twitter account, comes after lots of speculation about the Honduran president, Xiomara Castro, allegedly going to declare bitcoin legal tender in the country.<\/strong><\/p>\n In recent times, there\u2019s been a lot<\/a> of rumors<\/a> that claimed<\/a> the 56th president of Honduras Xiomara Castro may legalize bitcoin in Honduras. Some reports even noted<\/a> that an announcement may come from Honduras\u2019 government this week or \u201cthe coming days<\/a>.\u201d However, on March 23, the central bank of Honduras put the rumors to rest,<\/a> as the bank\u2019s statement<\/a> notes that crypto assets are neither legal tender nor regulated in Honduras.<\/p>\n \u201cBitcoin is a financial asset that exists virtually (also known as cryptocurrency), which at the moment in our country is not regulated and in most countries, it does not have the status of legal tender,\u201d Honduras\u2019 central bank letter explains.<\/p>\n The country\u2019s central bank further details that the central bank of Honduras is the \u201conly issuer of banknotes and legal tender coins in the national territory.\u201d Honduras\u2019 central banking system \u201cdoes not supervise or guarantee the operations carried out with cryptocurrencies,\u201d the bank\u2019s notice highlights.
