Elon Musk Refuses to Censor Russian News Sources<\/h2>\n

Spacex and Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted early Saturday morning that Starlink has been told by some governments to block Russian news sources. However, Musk said, \u201cWe will not do so unless at gunpoint. Sorry to be a free speech absolutist.\u201d<\/p>\n

Starlink is operated by Spacex. The service \u201cprovides high-speed, low-latency broadband internet across the globe,\u201d its website describes.<\/p>\n

Many people on Twitter commended Musk for not giving in to government requests.<\/p>\n

Replying to this tweet, a Twitter user told Musk, \u201cRussian \u2018news\u2019 resources are propaganda resources.\u201d The Spacex boss replied, \u201cAll new sources are partially propaganda, some more than others.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s parliament passed a draconian censorship bill this week to prosecute anyone spreading \u201cfalse news\u201d regarding the Russian military. Penalties include fines and up to 15 years imprisonment. Anti-war protestors and those calling for foreign sanctions on Russia can also be prosecuted. False news is described as anything not officially approved by the Kremlin.<\/p>\n

In addition, Russia\u2019s media regulator, Roskomnadzor, has issued strict guidelines for coverage of Ukraine and the Russian military. The media across the country can only publish information provided by official sources. It is forbidden, for example, to describe the attacks on Ukraine as an \u201cinvasion\u201d or a \u201cwar.\u201d Instead, they must be called a \u201cspecial military operation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Starlink Helps Ukraine Remain Connected<\/h2>\n

Mykhailo Fedorov, vice prime minister of Ukraine and the country\u2019s minister of digital transformation, asked Musk for help on Feb. 26.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile you try to colonize Mars \u2014 Russia tries to occupy Ukraine. While your rockets successfully land from space \u2014 Russian rockets attack Ukrainian civil people,\u201d he wrote. \u201cWe ask you to provide Ukraine with Starlink stations and to address sane Russians to stand.\u201d<\/p>\n

About 10 hours later, Musk replied to him: \u201cStarlink service is now active<\/a> in Ukraine. More terminals en route.\u201d The vice prime minister announced on Twitter Monday that the equipment for Starlink had arrived. He tweeted thanking Musk Wednesday, stating:<\/p>\n

Starlink keeps our cities connected and emergency services saving lives.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Musk tweeted a warning Thursday that Starlink is the only non-Russian communications system still working in some parts of Ukraine. The \u201cprobability of being targeted is high,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He further revealed: \u201cSome Starlink terminals near conflict areas were being jammed for several hours at a time. Our latest software update bypasses the jamming \u2026 Spacex reprioritized to cyber defense & overcoming signal jamming.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHold strong Ukraine,\u201d the Tesla CEO wrote Friday. He added, \u201cAlso my sympathies to the great people of Russia who do not want this.\u201d<\/p>\n
