The financial institution says despite its swift action, the region still faces a financing gap of $290 billion between now and the year 2023.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Sub-Sahara Africa\u2019s Limited Fiscal Space<\/h2>\n<p>According to the Fund, without significant additional financial assistance, many sub-Saharan African countries will struggle to simply maintain macroeconomic stability while meeting the basic needs of their populations.<\/p>\n<p>Emphasizing the urgency of the matter in a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.imf.org\/2020\/10\/22\/sub-saharan-africas-difficult-road-to-recovery\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery\">blog<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/the-great-financial-reset-imf-managing-director-calls-for-a-new-bretton-woods-moment\/\">International Monetary Fund<\/a> (IMF) concludes the region \u201cwill need access to more grants, concessional credit, and debt relief\u201d if it is \u201cto prevent the loss of decades-worth of development gains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The global lender says, unlike advanced economies that have had the space to do \u201cwhatever it takes\u201d to overcome effects of the pandemic, \u201cin sub-Saharan Africa no such luxury exists, as countries struggle to do \u2018whatever is possible\u2019 with their scarce resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-420045 size-full\" title=\"Covid-19 Hit Sub-Sahara Africa Gets $16 Billion From IMF, Region Still Faces $290B Financing Gap\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cryptocabaret.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/imf-2.png\" alt=\"Covid-19 Hit Sub-Sahara Africa Gets $16 Billion From IMF, Region Still Faces $290B Financing Gap\" width=\"566\" height=\"606\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cryptocabaret.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/imf-2.png 566w, https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/imf-2-280x300.png 280w, https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/imf-2-392x420.png 392w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 566px) 100vw, 566px\"><\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, the IMF is projecting a \u201cnegative 3 percent growth in sub-Saharan Africa\u2019s GDP in 2020, representing the worst outcome on record for the region.\u201d The drop will be even larger for economies dependent on tourism and commodity exports. Growth in the region should rebound modestly in 2021 to 3.1 percent, but for many countries, a return to 2019 levels will not occur until 2022\u201324.<\/p>\n<h2>The Region Is Still in Need of Additional Funding<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Fund reveals that the $16 billion it has availed will go towards the financing needs of 33 countries. It has also given \u201cimmediate debt service relief to 22 of the poorest, most vulnerable sub-Saharan African countries.\u201d Emphasizing the importance of relaxing debt repayment terms, the Fund explains:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We are working with countries to put in place governance mechanisms to help ensure that the funds benefit their people as intended.
