Payfast emphasized that <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\">BTC<\/a> has a number of limitations and design flaws which makes it an &ldquo;impractical substitute for cash.&rdquo;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Also read: <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/g20-leaders-declaration-crypto-assets-commitments\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">G20 Leaders Issue Declaration on Crypto Assets &ndash; A Look at Their Commitments<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Network Congestion and High Transaction Fees Force Payfast to Drop <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\">BTC<\/a> Support<\/h2>\n<p>According to a blog post written by Payfast, one of South Africa&rsquo;s largest online payment gateways, <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\">BTC<\/a> payments will no longer be processed after July 20, 2019. Payfast is a popular service provider with more than 80,000 registered merchants and was founded in 2007 by Jonathan Smit and Andy Higgins. The company blogpost details that unfortunately the company has found numerous limitations and &ldquo;design flaws unique to Bitcoin that make it an impractical substitute for cash.&rdquo; This includes high transaction fees and long confirmation times for Payfast customers. The company further said that <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\">BTC<\/a> once held the promise of a &ldquo;global currency that would allow a faster, cheaper, and easier way to move money on the Internet,&rdquo; but this never came to fruition. &ldquo;Our aim was to enable that promise for our buyers and merchants, and to support this alternative to traditional payment methods,&rdquo; Payfast highlighted. The South African company had partnered with the local cryptocurrency exchange Luno to provide an intermediary between a buyer&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\">BTC<\/a> wallet and the Payfast service.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PayFast?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@PayFast<\/a> Bitcoin Cash is the same version of Bitcoin that used to be fast, cheap and reliable. Bitpay supports it.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; &#8383; Mike (@libertarianbit) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/libertarianbit\/status\/1149709494139510785?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 12, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Payfast remarked that buyers always paid the <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\">BTC<\/a> amount, while sellers would receive a rand payment to their accounts. Luno also &ldquo;locked the Bitcoin to ZAR exchange rate for a 10 minute window,&rdquo; similarly to many cryptocurrency invoice solutions. For instance, the Atlanta-based Bitpay&rsquo;s invoices last 14 minutes. However, if the person&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\">BTC<\/a> transaction did not confirm within Luno&rsquo;s invoice window, the payment was unsuccessful and a refund would be due. The Payfast blog post noted:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>As Bitcoin has grown in popularity, it has become increasingly difficult for the network to sufficiently confirm transactions within the 10 minute time limit. Bitcoin ABC developer Amaury S&eacute;chet (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/deadalnix\">Deadalnix<\/a>) said on Twitter that &ldquo;the tragedy continues &mdash; One more payment processor dropping bitcoin.&rdquo; &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PayFast\">Payfast<\/a>, you might want to consider switching to bitcoin cash instead. Payfast&rsquo;s blog post further sparked a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BCH\" target=\"_blank\">BCH<\/a> supporters to vocalize that there was a solution available right now for Payfast and that the company should try bitcoin cash instead.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I have made zero payments with <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\">BTC<\/a> in the past 3 years, but dozens with <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BCH\" target=\"_blank\">BCH<\/a> with no issues and paying pennies in fees,&rdquo; a <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BCH\" target=\"_blank\">BCH<\/a> supporter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ampajaro\/status\/1149757275545964545\">chimed in<\/a> after Payfast made the announcement. &ldquo;If you add <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BCH\" target=\"_blank\">BCH<\/a> you will have my business.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>This isn&rsquo;t the first time bitcoin core (<a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\">BTC<\/a>) payments have been plagued with complaints about high fees and transaction congestion. There have been many well known companies that have dropped <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\">BTC<\/a> support for these very reasons. At the time a slew of merchants and online retailers dropped <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\">BTC<\/a> support due to the high fees and network congestion.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Collison brothers <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/stripe-founders-discuss-decision-drop-btc-payment-services\/\">questioned<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\">BTC<\/a> community and told them they faced a fork in the road where architects of the software chose to optimize <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\">BTC<\/a> to be a form of &ldquo;digital gold or a store of value.&rdquo; &ldquo;At the time we made our decision, it was trending towards being a digital store of value,&rdquo; Patrick told the press. Businesses such as <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bitcoin.com\/expedia-drops-bitcoin-payments-official-confirms\/\">Expedia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Bitcoin\/comments\/6g8fvp\/dell_no_longer_accepting_bitcoin_as_payment\/\">Dell Computers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/steamcommunity.com\/games\/593110\/announcements\/detail\/1464096684955433613\">Steam Games<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/reddit-drops-bitcoin-payment-option-for-gold-membership\">Reddit<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Bitcoin\/comments\/5phkbe\/fiverr_has_officially_stopped_using_bitcoin_as_a\/\">Fiverr<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2014\/9\/23\/6834437\/paypal-adds-limited-bitcoin-support\">Paypal<\/a> stopped supporting <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\">BTC<\/a>. Moreover, many startups that were once looking to use <a href=\"https:\/\/markets.bitcoin.com\/crypto\/BTC\" target=\"_blank\">BTC<\/a> in applications also ditched the cryptocurrency network for alternative blockchains with cheaper transaction fees.
